In pop star terms, X Factor winner Leona Lewis was once considered to be as dull as dishwater. But lately the singer has decided to sex up her once rather tame image, and what better route than via a tried and tested method – a tattoo. Leona unveiled her first – a Hebrew inking on her wrist – last year. And last night at the glamorous charity fundraiser, the Love Ball, she showed off her second, a poetic inking and tribute to her favourite animal, the horse. The tattoo which runs from the nape of her neck to her back reads: ‘Their beauty captures every eye, a gift from God for all mankind, they lend us wings so we may fly, to ride a horse is to ride the sky.’
It appears to be Leona’s second tattoo, although the undercover rebel may well be hiding more. Leona has taken her cue from celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, and Christina Aguilera, who also have tattoos in the same area.

The diva from Hackney has of late been channelling a more high fashion look of late. She arrived at charity event last night at the Roundhouse in North London in a bronze metallic one shouldered gown with corseted bodice. And wearing her hair in a fashionable fat braided side-plait, a look hot off the catwalks. Leona’s clothing choices appear to have got more daring after she slimmed down from a size 14 to a size 10 following a strict month-long detox regime.
The 24-year-old singer, who has always flown the flag for ‘normal’, curvy women, decided to change her diet after a lengthy spell in the recording studio. She said: ‘I only did the detox for a little while, but it must have kick-started something in me because everyone keeps saying: “Wow, you’ve lost weight!” and I’m like: “Cool!”‘
However, Leona says the decision to lose weight was hers and hers alone, and she has never felt under pressure from her industry to slim down. She said: ‘No one’s ever said, “You need to work out more.” ‘I put pressure on myself to stay healthy and I do want to look good, but I like to eat and I don’t like to starve myself!’
Leona is following a long line of stars who have had tattoos inscribed on the back of their neck. Perhaps the most famous is Victoria Beckham, whose tattoo runs from her neck to just below her shoulders. The Hebrew characters read: ‘I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.’
Cheryl Cole had a tattoo put on her beck just over a year after her doomed marriage to Ashley. It simply says ‘Mrs Cole’ as ‘a message to the boys’ that she is spoken for. As she faces a £22million divorce battle, she must now be regretting her optimism.
